This New Horror Film Can Be Streamed, and It Might Make or Break Your Relationship.

We present a challenge for those in enduring partnerships who enjoy horror films: Settle in with your significant other and view Together. The critically acclaimed 2025 movie has now made its streaming debut on Hulu. Outwardly, it could look like conventional biological terror, but within Together lies a profound examination about the ways we decide to love each other.

An Introductory Film Delving into Relationship Dynamics

Together marks the debut feature-length film for director Michael Shanks. It showcases the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Millie and Tim, a pair who are not married that have stayed together for ten years. United in marriage in real life in 2017, the actors contribute a particular energy to their roles, expertly portraying both the joys and frustrations of a committed partnership.

The narrative begins when Tim and Millie move from the urban environment to the rural area for professional reasons. A somewhat stereotypical plot device, of course, but that’s primarily where the conventions conclude. Together becomes as much a deep dive into the psyche of the partnership as it is a body horror flick.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While trekking near their rural residence, a violent storm occurs, and Millie and Tim tumble into an underground cave. After spending the night there and eventually escaping, a strange force begins influencing the duo. This force induces a otherworldly bond between them that goes exceeding emotional intimacy.

The complete narrative is a gradually intensifying fright fest, weaving in elements of fever-dream horrors, gross (but not excessively graphic) physical transformations, and surprisingly comedic dialogue (sometimes amidst something disturbing). Shanks weaves these elements together seamlessly and wraps them up in a gradually swelling sense of impending doom.

Layered Performances

A large part of Together is only the performances of its stars, and they masterfully render countless layers to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie’s confidence and feeling of intimacy is suffering due to a emotional and physical gap. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his unwillingness to chase only his floundering music career slowly bubbles to the surface.

Conversely, Tim experiences isolation and isolated by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve moved to the country and far away from his support system. He is terrified of the concept of completely losing his individual identity in Millie. This fear is intensified by the reality he does not operate a vehicle and relies on Millie for getting around.

Shanks’ smartest move in this movie avoids making either of his characters the obvious villain.

Both characters grapple with the type of challenges that are inherent in long-term unions over a long period. Deep down, they continue to care for each other. They find humor with each other, provide solace, and open up at times. But below this facade, there’s an unavoidable feeling of questioning about their bond.

Thematic Depth

While the paranormal elements in Together act as a metaphor for these fears of unhealthy attachment and totally devoting oneself to another person, the metaphor does not come across as hamfisted or heavy-handed. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes provide a ideal counterpart to the relationship narrative. Both the horror and the drama serve the other symbiotically.

A Debated Finale

Together’s ending, which won’t be spoiled here, has sparked debate on the film’s ultimate message about codependent relationships. It has been said that unattached audience members have understood the narrative as a compelling reason for remaining unattached. Conversely, a few pairs experiencing tension found that the film ended up guiding them to reconcile.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own response could act as a telling indicator of how you think about commitment. Will the finale plant feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you recognize your own traits in either protagonist and feel frustration, or simply turn to your partner and state, “I understand that choice”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an exploration you can undertake today.

Together is streaming on the streaming service Hulu at present.
