Fed Cuts Interest Rates for Second Time This Year During Economic Uncertainty

The US monetary authority cut interest rates on Wednesday, representing the second rate cut in the current year amid financial volatility stemming from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.

Decision Comes at Unprecedented Time for Federal Reserve

The decision to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a span of 4% to 3.75% comes at an unprecedented moment for the central bank. The institution has been under immense pressure to cut rates even with ongoing price increases.

Central Bank Announcement Highlights Labor Market Changes

In a announcement, the Federal Reserve said that the unemployment rate had increased but remains low. “Job gains have decelerated,” the release notes. “Price increases has moved up and remains moderately high.”

Government Shutdown Hinders Fed’s Job

The continuing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in US history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Collection of important economic data has been indefinitely halted as staff at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the shutdown.

Data Gap Impacts Monetary Moves

The Fed usually analyzes labor statistics to assess employment trends, such as the count of employment gains added to the market and the current jobless percentage. The last jobs report was published in the beginning of last month, prior to the shutdown, and provided a somewhat gloomy overview of the jobs market in August.

The figure of positions added to the market in the summer month was lower by over 100k since the spring, and unemployment crept up to 4.3% – the highest since 2021.

Private Data Show Continued Decline

Though the bureau was set to release last month’s employment data in the start of last month, it suspended its release when the closure started. Employment data company ADP reported recently that the business segment cut thirty-two thousand positions in September, a sign that the employment landscape is still decelerating.

“Supply as well as demand for workers has fallen quite sharply,” central bank head Jerome Powell said recently, a trend he had previously attributed comes from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Reveals Gradual Rise

Though the bureau’s jobs report has been paused, the bureau still released its inflation report for last month that showed that prices are going up, albeit slowly. Costs rose 3% over the last year, the peak since January. In spring, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since 2021. The Fed’s target price increase is two percent.
